The one question I heard the most as a seminary teacher was, “How can I tell the difference between my own thoughts and revelation?”

In Doctrine and Covenants 6-9 the Lord teaches Oliver, Joseph, and us some of the patterns for personal revelation.

For example, when the Lord says, “I will tell you in your mind and in your heart,” think about all the different ways the Lord has given you revelation in this pattern.

My study tip for this week is to get a copy of Elder David A. Bednar’s book, “The Spirit of Revelation”. As you read, you’ll discover the many different patterns and principles of revelation, plus personal stories from Elder Bednar’s life.

Can you think of someone in your life who was an answer to your prayers?

Next week in the Doctrine and Covenants we meet a young school teacher named Oliver Cowdery.

Prior to meeting Oliver, Joseph had faced setback after setback in his efforts to translate the plates.

In section 5, the Lord declared to Joseph, “Stop, and stand still until I command thee, and I will provide means whereby thou mayest accomplish the thing which I have commanded thee” (Doctrine & Covenants 5:34).

That “means” would soon come through Oliver Cowdery, whom the Lord was (at that very time) preparing to come and assist Joseph.

New to seeking and receiving revelation from the Lord, Oliver struggled at times to trust and understand what the Lord had told him. As we read Oliver’s experiences, it is the perfect week to learn more about revelation and how we can better seek and understand God’s guidance in our lives.
