4th of July Banner- The Red Headed Hostess
I wanted to re-post this because…
I just hung it up and I am in love with it all over again.
And I think it would be a great weekend project.
We are quickly approaching the 4th of July – so its time to pull out the Americana decor!
This is a fun and easy decorating project. In fact, this is simple enough that you could have your kids help you out.
You start out by cutting burlap into the size you like. I did 5 1/2 x 8.
If you like the raw edges, you could keep it like this
But your banner may slowly disappear as it de-threads itself
So just fold over the sides a bit and sew
And then fold over the top and create a little pocket for the twine to slip through when you put the banner together
Here are the final dimenions:
Here is the width
And the length. If they aren’t all exactly the same – that will just add to the rustic, homemade essence of the banner.
Now it is the fun part where you get to paint.
Here you can see how I made the star. I love cookie cutters.
And the stripes. Make sure you press the masking tape down really good.
You can create different sizes of stripes. And I didn’t paint very thickly because I wanted it to look kind of worn
…and if you put this in front of a window, the light shines through and looks super cool.
I made these polka dots by dipping the end of a wooden skewer into the paint. Your kids could do this.
After everything dries, then string them onto a piece of twine. I did this easily by taking a long wooden skewer and hot gluing the twine onto the end so I could easily thread the twine through the pockets.
Hi Shannon! I was just introduced to your blog and absolutely love it! I wanted to ask you if you could tell me where you purchased the shades that you have for your sliding glass door. That probably seems really strange…of all things to ask, but I noticed them in the background and I think they look fantastic. I have been looking for a solution to our sliding glass door for some time and the drapery panels that I have hung there now just aren’t cutting it. They get in the way and have all sorts of finger prints on them now! Thanks so much if you can point me in the right direction!
fun!
